The castle opened 2019 to public. It was built in 12th century it was a manor house that was converted to a castle Bishop Bek and he built the defense wall around the castle and chapel.  

The castle is based in Bishop Auckland market place where The Mining Art Gallery and The Spanish Gallery in the same area also owned by Auckland project.

  • To learn about the history of the castle.
  • Guided tours around the castle and you can look at paints by Bishop Trevor.
  • You can go into St Peters Chapel and attend services at the chapel.
  • You can have food at Auckland Castle Café.
  • There is also a gift shop in the castle.
  • The staff are really friendly and happy to help the castle is peaceful inside.
  • They also do presentations and private events.

Basically, there are many different reasons why Auckland Castle is accessible including:

  • There is a lift for wheelchairs and you can hire a wheelchair
  • Information can be read out loud for people to listen to
  • The castle has disabled toilets.
  • Guide dogs are allowed
  • You can get a free ticket for carers, click here for information on tickets
  • There is a bus stop for number 6, 56, and X21 a couple minutes’ walk, there is a taxi rank in the market place and disabled parking.
  • In addition, the path is easy to access to and from the castle to the market place and around the grounds.
