What is Housesteads Roman Fort?

The Housesteads Roman Fort is a ruins of a fort that was once apart of the Hadrian’s wall. 

What is there to do?

There are quite a lot of different activity’s to do such as you can just relax and enjoy the view and surrounding areas. Another thing to do is to get a tour and find out what each part of the ruins where such as the barracks block, hospital, commander’s house and granaries. A third activity is to visit the museum where you can find out how they built there fort as well as the civilian settlement which developed just outside.

What is the history?

At the beginning the fort was built along with the Hadrian’s wall in 122-32 AD. Moreover at the time the fort was built it was known as Vercovicium. Also along with Housesteads fort there are 14 other forts along the wall. All forts combined allowed Hadrian wall to be garrisoned by nearly 10,000 people. The fort itself held around 800 soldiers
