Love Lily had started as a bakery and cake shop business making cakes and other sweet treats and selling online. They business became really successful from there custom made-to-order products including their treat boxes and cakes for special celebrations.

Now, the business has opened two café venues located at Herrington Park in Houghton Le Spring and Sunderland. Their Herrington Country Park venue opened in 2022 and started well with flying colours- literally. Their pinks and rainbow-coloured branding throughout their business attracts a wide population including families, being most popular among women and babies. It is also the perfect place for a couples’ romantic brunch out on the park.

The food you can order in this café in Houghton Le Spring is like no other. Their menu includes their famous brunches including:

  • American style breakfasts with pancakes and streaky bacon.
  • Homemade tomato, red pepper and lentil soup .
  • Their signature brunch including seasoned potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, sausages, and thyme-roasted tomato.

What makes their brunch menu really stand out is their list of “benny’s” dishes- basically toasted sourdough with slow-cooked pork or streaky bacon, poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise sauce.

They even have a “pick-me-up” list of alcoholic tipples on their brunch menu including prosecco, and two cocktails as well as concentrate apple and orange juice.

Also on their menu is their wide selection of burgers all served in brioche buns. Where else can you order a Lotus Biscoff brioche burger!?

They have a vast selection of pancakes which are served in stacks of 4 or 2 pancakes. They personally recommend the “Cinnamon Hun” pancake. Definitely worth treating yourself to one of these delicious luxury desserts.

For breakfast, you can order a range of breakfast sandwiches all served in brioche buns including different varieties of sausages and streaky bacon.

And they also have a kids menu which includes smaller-sized portion meals including:

  • Mini brunch
  • Cheeseburgers
  • Scrambled egg or beans on toast
  • Mini pancakes
  • Drinks for kids including fruit juice, fresh apple and orange juice, milk, hot chocolate and milkshakes.

As for their drinks selection- they obviously serve hot drinks including:

  • Americano
  • Flat white
  • Latte
  • Cappuccino
  • Tea including speciality tea such as London Fog, Chai tea latte, and iced tea with flavours like peach, watermelon and cucumber & mint.
  • Hot chocolate including speciality hot chocolates with cream and all kinds of sweet toppings. Try the Cherry Bakewell one!

They make their own signature special caffe latte which is made with pink milk and vanilla syrup! Other speciality lattes and coffees include Lotus, Kinder, Nutella, praline and red velvet and many other luxury lattes. If you’re on a strict diet, you can even try one of their superfood lattes such as beetroot or turmeric which are all made with soya milk.

They have a separate milkshake menu which includes all kinds of luxury gourmet milkshakes including flavours like pistachio, Banoffee, and raspberry & white chocolate.

Herrington Park

This café in Houghton Le Spring is located at Herrington Country Park. The park is opposite Penshaw Monument and spans over a large space of land that includes plenty of accessible footpaths, fields for having picnics and playing on and a massive lake. It is the perfect place for walking, taking your dog for walks/exercises, picnics with the family, and you can also play with remote-control boats on the lake.

The café is situated at the top end of the park very close to the exit/entrance and has the main car park right by it. You can come here with the family to spend quality time on the park and then have lunch out together. It’s also ideal for a romantic morning or afternoon walk accompanied with lovely coffee and breakfast. You don’t need to pay to visit the park, and you don’t even have to go round the park to visit the café.

There is also a children’s play area round the back of the café. It is perfect for young children aged 5+. Parts of the playground are also suitable for toddlers.

Outdoor kiosk

This Houghton Le Spring café also has a separate kiosk round the back beside the playground and outside seating area. They serve all coffees, drinks and snacks at the kiosk that are also served indoors. The outdoor area is also dog-friendly and you can even get treats for your dogs at the kiosk too.

There are plenty of picnic benches to sit at, right next to the playground so you can watch the little ones and it also overlooks the rest of the park offering a nice view.

Love Lily’s café in Houghton Le Spring at Herrington Country Park is a very family-friendly, and child-friendly café with accessibility for people of all needs and requirements.

Wheelchair access

They have a sloped ramp or walkway with railings towards the front entrance. The door is automatic and there is plenty of space to store wheelchairs as well as pushchairs to the right hand side as you come in. The surrounding park is very wheelchair accessible as it has plenty of wide, flat footpaths paved with solid tarmac. The outdoor space is also accessible to wheelchairs as there are no steps leading to it and plenty of space around the benches.

Toilet facilities

The toilets are located by the outdoor seating area. These include females, males and disabled toilets with baby changing facilities also provided. You can also access the outside area from the indoor space through a wide door near the back of the main café room.

Inclusive menu

The menu accounts for people of all different dietary requirements. They actually have a separate menu for vegan and vegetarian options. Their menu includes a page with a dietary guide listing all different types of dietary information and how to identify them throughout the menu. This includes:

  • Anything containing nuts
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Gluten-friendly
  • Dishes available as vegetarian/vegan on request
  • Dishes available as gluten-friendly on request
  • Dishes available as dairy-free on request
  • Anything that may be unsuitable for children’s activity and attention (E-numbers)

It also advises guests to ask staff for further information on allergens. All of their hot drinks can be made with almond, oat, soya and coconut milk.

Seating space

All of the seating space is designed for maximum comfort and convenience to all visitors. Chairs can be moved around easily and are lightweight. High stools as well as chairs are also available with high level surfaces to eat/drink at. The outdoor space includes picnic benches. The option to eat/drink outside is ideal for people who may have sensory needs (noise) or prefer less busy spaces.

Child-friendly

This café in Houghton Le Spring is perfect to bring your little ones. Whether you have infants, toddlers or kids aged 5+. The café provides plenty of highchairs inside and has space to leave pushchairs. The menu is also designed to cater for younger people too, with a whole section of the menu listing all dishes, drinks and snacks suitable for children and babies.

The playground outside is another reason why this café in Houghton Le Spring is child-friendly.

Atmosphere

It is a very vibrant, light-hearted and relaxed atmosphere inside the café. The majority of the colour scheme inside is a soft pink. The room has a high ceiling with chandelier lighting. Some of the décor in the café makes it feel almost “tropical” with artificial greenery on some of the wall space and neon signs. The noise levels are generally quiet with music playing in background. There can be the occasional clatter of dishes and cups at the counter area and this is the noisiest part of the room. The room is large enough to offer space away from the bustling counter that is quieter. It can get most busy on weekends and school holidays but the café is open through the week and on mornings when it is likely to be less busy.

Parking

Parking is readily available right outside the café. You literally drive into the parks main entrance and the road leads you straight to this car park. There is disabled spaces as well as parent & child spaces. There is also another car park further down the park right beside the lake which is just a 5 minutes walk back up to the café. If it gets full and busy, the park provides an overflow parking area on the grass to the left as you drive into the park. All the parking is free of charge and you can stay for as long as the park is open.

Public transport

The nearest bus stop is on the main road and it is a seven-minute’s walk from the café. Buses can be caught here from as far as Consett, Washington and Sunderland. There is no train station nearby due to the location of the park.
