On the outskirts of Whitby, you will find the secluded beach of Saltwick Bay. Packed with history and fascinating geology, Saltwick Bay makes for a magical day out.

What is Saltwick Bay like?

The bay is rich with fossils and you can spend countless hours combing the shoreline for ammonites, reptiles and shells. Search hard enough and you may even be lucky enough to spot some Whitby Jet, a gemstone unique to the area. Further finds can also be made at the nearby Black Nab, a dramatic craggy island, as well as stunning photos. Indeed, numerous noteworthy fossils have been uncovered over the years. Extinct dinosaurs and Jurassic crocodile remains have been discovered, which now reside in the Whitby Museum.

You should check tide times before going off on your adventures to ensure that you aren’t stranded on the beach. You can check this online or stop by the holiday park reception, where tide times are posted daily. Furthermore, be careful at the foot of the cliffs as falling rocks are a real danger

At low tide, you can also inspect the remains of two shipwrecks, the HMHS Rohilla and the Admiral von Tromp. Numerous rockpools are also revealed.

Be sure to stay at this sublime spot to watch the sun set over the North Sea. Though most sunsets are breath-taking, Saltwicks is particularly so, with the dramatic silhouettes of shipwrecks and craggy rock stacks set against mirror-like waters. With panoramic views encompassing Whitby Abbey and the splendid Yorkshire Coastline, Saltwick Bay is a must-see!

Accessibility

You must be careful when walking out across the bay, as the rocks that make up the majority of the beach can be rather slippery. Additionally, the steps down to the beach are quite steep and uneven in places. Furthermore, the journey down is quite long and arduous, so some people may find the journey down rather difficult.

You can access the beach through the Whitby Holiday Park that is perched along the clifftop. The path down to the beach is located to the right of the holiday park entrance.

From Whitby, you should head toward the Abbey along Green lane. At the end of the road, turn right onto Hawsker Lane. Drive down the road for a few hundred metres and then turn left toward the holiday park.

Q Is there parking available at Saltwick Bay Beach?

Unfortunately there does not appear to be much parking available. Begore the Whitby holiday park, there are a few spaces for you to park in. Many visitors park near Whitby Abbey and follow the clifftop paths to reach the beach.
