The Stanley Jefferson Wetherspoons is named after Arthur Stanley Jefferson who lived in Bishop Auckland built in 1893 as a cinema and variety theatre called the playhouse. It operated as a theatre until 1929 it also become a cinema called the regal. The cinema closed in 1967 and then changed to a Bingo hall and furniture store. On June 17th 1998 it became a pub then was later bought by JD Wetherspoons.
