Located on Walney Island, a small island off the Cumbrian Coast, West Shore Beach is a gently sloping shingle beach which has a sand section at low tide. Walney Island covers an area of 13km2, and it is accessible from the mainland via the Jubilee Bridge.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust runs two nature reserves on Walney Island: the North Walney Nature Reserve, and the South Walney Nature Reserve. Both reserves house natterjack toads, a rare species within the UK. South Walney is also home to the only colony of grey seals within Cumbria.
