The Leisure Complex and swimming baths opened in 1968 by Durham County Council and after 30 years of trying it cost £300,000 to build.
The Leisure complex is home to the General Gym and swimming facilities.

The Leisure Complex has got a disabled carpark space on the front next to the main entrance with the automatic door, the other carpark space on the back of the Leisure Complex is really big, it’s a minute walk from the bus stop, you can get the x21, number 6 and number 87 bus down from Woodhouse Lane to Bishop Auckland Bus Station.
The male and female changing rooms have disabled changing room access and the main swimming pool has got a pool lift so that a disabled person can get in the pool and the pool lift is manual, it is easy to use. In addition, there is a small pool and a training pool. The main reception has a disabled door near the weight scales. However, the building does not have a lift so there is no access for anyone capable of using the stairs so they can go into the pool viewing area and the functional room.
