York DIG is a hands on archaeology experience for kids. It is situated in the St. Saviour church building in York, which went redundant as a church in 1954. Subsequently, York Archaeology took ownership in 1974. In 2006, it was opened as York DIG and has been operating ever since.

What’s to do at York DIG?

York DIG has a range of activities for all ages.

  • For 5-12 year olds – the experience begins with an interactive archaeology talk which involves passing around real artifacts. Then, kids get to explore 4 replica excavation pits based on real York archaeology projects. Here they can use trowels to find replica objects. Additionally, there is community exhibition spaces to explore.
  • For 0-5 year olds – if they are happy to join in, they can take part in the full experience of the replica excavation pits. However, if preferred there is a play available which staff will direct you to.
  • For adults – there is a York DIG adults tour at the end of each day. This involves using trowels and brushes to discover real artifacts. You will also get the chance to look at replicas of important archaeological finds. Furthermore, there will be an archaeologist available throughout to answer any questions.

Accessibility

York DIG has a level ground entrance. Inside the museum there is a lift that allows access to the whole building and a disabled toilet. Additionally, there is seating available throughout the building. Staff all have disability awareness and autism awareness training. Also, some staff have BSL training.

Noise levels at York DIG can be high as it is in a church building which can be echoey. The museum has a supply of ear defenders and sensory packs available at reception. Additionally, there is a quiet space and garden area for visitors who are feeling overwhelmed. For a quieter visit during term time, after 3pm on weekdays or on a weekend morning is recommended. In terms of parking, there is no parking available at York DIG. The nearest parking available is at Foss Bank carpark which is a 7 minute walk away.
